The 80/20 Rule of Success

THUD! SMACK! WACK!

Do you know what that sound is? It is the sound of a golden, life altering opportunity hitting you right in the face. Everyone can think of the few defining moments that changed their life. Maybe it was starting that career that lasted for 20+ years or meeting your life-long partner for the first time or hiking the Appalachian to discover new life goals. This is reality of something known as the 80/20 principle and it is EVERYWHERE. You see it in businesses, relationships, marketing, hobbies, nature… EVERYWHERE!

The 80/20 principle says that 80% of your results will come from 20% of the causes or efforts.

Examples:

  • 80% of your frustrations come from 20% of your problems.
  • 80% of your happiness comes from 20% of your efforts.
  • 80% of your sales comes from 20% of your customers.
  • 80% of software problems comes from 20% of the computer bugs.
  • 80% of your time spent on phone apps comes from 20% of your apps.
  • 80% of the wealth is held by 20% of the population.

Sometimes, it is not always an exact 80/20 mix. It could be 95/5, 70/30, 60/40 or even 99/1. It is more important that you understand that this uneven distribution exists. Once that light bulb ignites, you can began to unleash the power of the 80/20 monster.

“Okay, I get it but how does this apply to marketing my business online?”

As mentioned earlier, 80% of your sales comes from 20% of your customers. The goal of direct-response digital marketing is to focus on that 20% because they are the best customers you got. Think of that 20% like a patient that is walking into the ER with a bleeding neck and the only solution is your product or service. RIGHT NOW! If you treat them well, you don’t just get customers, you create fans. Fans will sell your company to their families, friends, and networks for you.

8,760.

That is the number of hours in a full year. Ask yourself – “How much have I accomplished in the last 8,760 hours?” 80/20 that further – “How much have you accomplished in the last 1752 hours?” Isn’t it time to start making that 20%, the things that bring you the most success and opportunities in your life?
